1) 創設して / Background

"ゲント現代美術館" / "Museum of Contemporary Art, Ghent" /
"Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst" : "S.M.A.K." は、かなり良いと聞いたので、ぜひ行きたいと思いました。

ゲント現代美術館 : S.M.A.K. の公式サイト : ★

現代美術館は、旧市街よりもゲント駅に近かったので、ゲントで最初に行きました。

1975年に "ゲント現代美術館" は、"ゲント美術館" / "Museumvoor Schone Kunsten Gent" の所蔵作品で構成され、場所も "ゲント美術館" の一角と用いる形で設立され、ヤン・フート/ Jan Hoet (1936 -2014) が監督に任命されました。

"コレクションは約1000点ほどあり、抽象表現主義からポップ・アート、コンセプチュアル・アートという20世紀後半の美術史の流れを網羅している。"

2005年より、新館長に若手のフィリップ・ファン・カウテレン/ Philippe Van Cauteren (? ~) が就任しています。

ヤン・フートがかなり力があった人だったので、彼が退いた後 (2003 ~)、身内で結構もめたようでした。

現在、アート部門をフィリップ・ファン・カウテレンが担当し、2009年より、ビジネス部門では、フィリップ・ヴァン・デンヴェーゲ / Philippe Van denweghe が担当しています。

フィリップ・ヴァン・デンヴェーゲの課題は、49万ユーロの赤字を解消することです。

とにかく、"S.M.A.K." が続いてくれれば良いと思います。

がんばれ、"S.M.A.K." ！

いつものように、迷いながら探していると、

突然、この建物に出会い、驚きました。

As usual, we were looking for the museum and lost our way,

when suddenly we encountered this building and I was surprised.

Background

I heard that "Museum of Contemporary Art, Ghent" / "Stedelijk Museum voor

Actuele Kunst" : "S.M.A.K." is quite good, so I definitely wanted to go there.

S.M.A.K.'s Official website: ★

The Museum is closer to Ghent station than the old town, so we went there first in Ghent.

In 1975 "S.M.A.K." was founded with works composed from collections of "Museum voor Schone Kunsten Gent", and it was in a part of the "Museum voor Schone Kunsten Gent" and Jan Hoet (1936 - 2014) was appointed as the first director.

In 1999, "S.M.A.K." moved into present railway station which was newly refurbished.

According to a site of "21st Century Museum of Art, Kanazawa" about "S.M.A.K."

in Japanese (translated by me).

"There are about 1,000 works, covering the flow of art history in the second half of the 20th century from abstract expressionism to pop art, conceptual art."

Young Philippe Van Cauteren (? ~) has been the new director since 2005.

As Jan Hoet had considerable power, after he retired (2003~), the museum seemed to have chaos.

Philippe van Kautelen is in charge of the art department now, and since 2009, in the business department Philippe Van Denvege / Philippe Van denweghe is in charge.

Philip van Denvege's challenge is to eliminate the deficit of 490,000 euros.

Anyway, I hope that "S.M.A.K." can continue.

S.M.A.K. からゲント美術館を見る
Museum voor Schone Kunsten from S.M.A.K.

ゲント美術館はお隣。

この日は時間がなく、行きませんでしたが、次回があるなら行きたいものです。

Museum voor Schone Kunsten is next -door to S.M.A.K.

We did not have enough time on this day so we did not go, though I would want to visit if I have a next time.

1999年、元駅舎を改装した建物が開館しました。

屋上右には、"雲を測る男" の像、

ヤン・ファーブル : ★ (1958 ~) 作、があります(下の写真)。

ファーブル作品のわりには、ロマチックなタイトルとイメージです。

In 1999, "S.M.A.K." moved into present railway station
which was newly refurbished.

On the rooftop right, there is a statue of "The man who measures the Clouds"

by J an Fabre ★ (1958~), below.
This sounds a romantic title and image,
especially considering this work is by Fabre.

"雲を測る男"

ヤン・ファーブル (1958 ~) は『昆虫記』(1879 -1907) の作者、

アンリ・ファーブル / Jean-Henri Fabre (1823-1915）の曾孫 (ヒマゴ)です。

"The man who measures the Clouds"

J an Fabre (1958 ~) is the great-grandson Jean-Henri Fabre who

wrote "Souvenirs Entomologiques" ; 'insect notes' (1879 -1907).

"本作品は、『終身犯』（1961年米国）という映画から着想を得て制作されました。

この映画は、監獄に入れられた主人公が独房で小鳥を飼い、鳥類学者となった実話に基づいています。

映画の終わりで研究の自由を剥奪された主人公が、「今後は何をして過ごすのか」と問われ、「雲でも測って過ごすさ」と答えましたが、作品のタイトルはその台詞に由来しています。

また、この作品は作家の身体を型どりしていますが、そこには、彼の兄の死を思い、制作されたという背景もあります。人間の生と死、そして、自然科学と「雲を測る」という詩的な行為など、様々な要素を併せ持つ作品です。"

(この美術館のサイトはよく整理されていて、英語版もほぼ、日本語版から、全項、全訳されていて、感激しました)

According to a website of 21st Century Museum of Art, Kanazawa
about "The man who measures the Clouds"

"This work was inspired by Birdman of Alcatraz (1961, USA), a film based on the true story of a man who kept birds in his cell while imprisoned in solitary confinement and became an ornithologist.

At the film’s end, when the man, who has been denied permission to continue his research, is asked about his future plans, he replies: “I am going to measure the clouds.”

The artwork takes its title from this line. Although modeled after the artist himself, The Man Who Measures the Clouds also pays homage to his late twin brother.

It is thus a work blending various elements—human life and death, natural science, and the poetic gesture of “measuring the clouds.”"

2) 1階 / Ground Floor

この美術館はRのガイドブックでも褒めていたので、彼も珍しく見て回りました。

This museum is praised by R 's guide book, so unusually, he also looked around.

入り口付近
閉じられているスペースも多いので、チケットを買う際に、
それでもいいかと確認されました。
ではまた今度という頻度ではここには来ることができないので、
もちろん、チケットを購入しました。

We can not come here as I say next time , so, of course, we bought a ticket.

ミュージアム・ショップがありません。レジ脇に本が売られているだけです。

There is no museum shop. The book is just sold beside the cash register.

3) 贅沢空間 / Luxurious Space

この美術館のレイアウトは、空間を贅沢に使っていて、芸術の森の中をお散歩しているような感覚でした。

私はこの空間構成が好きであり、羨ましくもありました。

The layout of this museum used space luxuriously, so I felt I had a walk in an art forest.

I liked this spatial composition, as well as I was envious.

常設展

このレイアウトの場合、通常は壁にも何かが展示されているように思いますが、

ここでは白い壁のままです。

Permanent Exhibition

I think that normally something in the display on the walls,
however, in the case of this layout, here is a white wall!

作品タイトル、作家名ともにわかりません。

I do not know either the work title or the artist name.

特別展は開催されていないと感じましたが、実際には、

Michael E. Smith (1977〜) 展 : 24.06. 2017 - 01.10.2017 : : ★ / ★

があったのでした。

膨大なスペースに、わずか11個の作品だったので、私には特別展覧会を見ている感覚はなく、常設展示かと思いました。

他では見られない贅沢空間が展示されていたので、ここに来た甲斐はあったと思いますし、Michael E. Smithのセンスは結構好きでした。

I felt that no special exhibition was held, in fact Michael E. Smith (1977 ~) Exhibition : ★ / ★.

Because there were only 11 pieces in a huge space, I was in a special exhibition and thought it was a permanent exhibition.

Because the exhibitions used spaces luxuriously in ways that I had not seen elsewhere I think that it was worth coming here and I also quite liked the sense of Michael E. Smith.

4) ミッシェル・スミス展 / Michael E. Smith Exhibition

ミッシェル・スミス/ Michael E. Smith (1977~) は、アメリカのアーティストで、
生まれ故郷のデトロイトに今も住んでいます。

今回の展覧会 : ★ / ★ は、彼自身がレイアウトしたり、ライティングしたり、ドアノブまで変えたりしました。

"アーティストは、空間解決(空間作り)の為に、直感的に展覧会をアレンジし、

「動きを作る」と「ぽっと投げる : フリップする」
という言葉を使用します。"

"彼の見解では、部屋にオブジェを配置することは、作品を完成させる過程の基本的
な部分です。"

私が彼のセンスが好きな訳がわかった気がします。

Leaflet for Michael E. Smith Exhibition

Michael E. Smith (1977 ~) is an American artist, he still lives in Detroit which is his birthplace.

In this Exhibition : ★ / ★, he himself organized the layout and lighting and even had the door-handles moved.

According to the Exhibition's leaflet,
"The artist describes the way he intuitively arranges exhibitions : for spatial
solutions the phrases he uses include 'making moves' and 'making flips'."

"In his view, setting up his objects in the room is an elementary part of the
process of completing his works."

I feel I understood the reasons, I like his sense.

作品は光っているスクリーンです。/ The work is a shining screen.

ロンドンのテイト・モダンのように人であふれかえっていないので、この空間が
生かせます。

ここを訪れた人だけが空間と作品の対話をもてるのですね。
(とは言っても、私はたいした対話はもてませんが...<苦笑>)

I thought that here is not like the Tate Modern in London which is overflowing with people, so this space made useable and more enjoyable.

Only people who visited here could dialogue with luxurious spaces and the works, couldn't they (we)?

(Even though I say like that, I did not have a great dialogue ... <Wry smile>)

こわい〜〜！でも美的センスは優れていると思います。

I am scared ~ ~! However, I think that the aesthetic sense is excellent.

う〜っ、不気味じゃ〜！ / WoW! that's spooky ~!

「え〜っ、何これ？」、

「あんな所に！」

「は〜っ!?」

という戸惑いを心の中で叫びながら、楽しく展覧会を見ました....というか、楽しい経験をしました。

"Well, what is this?",

"In such a place!"

"Wow !?"

While I was shouting in my mind, being bewildered, I looked round the Exhibition happily ... or perhaps I should say I experienced the Exhibition happily.

常設展と勘違いして、作品を見ていました。

今になって、冊子などをじっくり見ると特別展 :

I mistook it as a permanent exhibition when I was looking at the works.

Later when I looked over the booklet etc. I noticed that it was a special exhibition :

HOW BEAUTIFUL IT IS AND HOW EASILY IT CAN BE BROKEN

この美術館は、壊れやすそうな感じの作品が好きです。

私がその手の感じが好きなので、

そういう作品ばかり目にとまうのかもしれません。
ですが、この展覧会のタイトル：
"HOW BEAUTIFUL IT IS AND HOW EASILY IT CAN BE BROKEN"
を考えると、今回はそういう作品を意図的に展示しているのですね。

This museum seems to like works that feel fragile.

Since I like that type of feeling,

it may be that I only notice such works.
However, when I considered this Exhibition title :
"HOW BEAUTIFUL IT IS AND HOW EASILY IT CAN BE BROKEN",
they intentionally display works like these.
