1)マラム/ Malham
マラム (Malham) 村はスキプトン (Skipton) の北西にあたり、
ヨークシャーデールの中では南側に位置します。
マラムコーヴ (Malham Cove)：石灰岩で、できた崖(上の写真)と
マラムターム(Malham Tarn)：湖があります。
マラムコーヴは
'昔昔、その頂上から巨大な氷河が溶けて流れ落ちる大きな滝でした。'

このような珍しい風景を持っているマラム村は、村であっても、
宿泊所や夕飯の場所のいくつかの選択肢があります。
マラムタームはチャールズキングスレイが刺激を受けて『水の子』を書いたところでもあります。
ですがそれは私がマラムを選んだあとに知ったことでした。

因にデール: Daleとは谷: バレー: Valleyのことで、主に北イングランドで使用されています。

'Once upon a time, a huge waterfall poured over the top as a massive glacier melted on the high land above it", from the explanation board.
Malham has an amazing site like that, so we could have a few choices for staying and having dinner, even though it is only a village.
By the way, 'Dale' means 'Valley', mainly it is used in the North of England.

のんびりと過ごせると思います。
上のイラストレーションは私達が泊まった"リバーハウスホテル" で、この川のそばに立地しています。
ここは月曜から土曜日の晩、夕飯がとれ、バーの設備もそれなりにあるのでホテルと呼ばれますが、実際はB&Bに近いと私は思います。
初日の晩はここで夕飯をとりましたが、美味しかったです。
B&Bとして良い方だと思います。

This illustration is "River House Hotel" where we stayed three nights.
The hotel sits beside the river.
Actually I think here is B&B rather than hotel.
Just they manage dinner from Monday to Saturday and have a small bar, so they must call it hotel.
We had dinner here the first night, and enjoyed it.
I think it is a better than average B&B.

隣のパブの外には、私が泊まった間、毎朝ヤギが見られました。
赤いばらと一緒で、英国らしい気が私にはしました。
因に私達はこのパブには行きませんでした。
While we stayed there, we saw goats in front of red roses
next door, a pub. It was very British for me.
By the way, we did not go to the pub.

2) 長い一日 / A Long Day for us
A: マラムコーヴ/ Malham Cove
マラムのガイドマップにはいくつかの基本的なウォーキングのコースが載っています。
歩く事が不慣れな私達は、マラムコーヴがくみこまれた
一番短いコース、4.5マイル(約7.6Km)を選びました。

それでも自信はなく、疲れたら無理をしないで諦めようとも思っていました。

A leaflet of Malham suggests a few walks.
We are not good at walking, so we selected the shortest : 4.5 miles, even though we were not sure ourselves.
We talked about the walking, if we became tired, we should give up at once.
We walked very slowly.

ここからさきはナショナルトラストの領域で、
徒歩のみ侵入が可能です。
車ではマラムコーヴに行けないことも魅力のひとつですが、
私達にはかなりしんどい……、フウッ！
From here, it is National Trust area, so people can only walk.
It is one of Malham Cove's attractive features.
However, it is quite hard for us. Gasp!

そしてマタムコーヴを堪能しました。

Eventually we arrived there. We had two cups of tea, biscuits and banana, while we had a rest.

B: ゴーデールスカー / Gordale Scar
登ったからには降りなければならず、
降りるなら違う道を歩きたい……、
道に迷いたくない、
なんとか日があるうちにB&Bに戻りたい……、
なので地図にのっているフットパスを使いたい……
ということで、へろへろになりながらも
次の目的地ゴーデールスカー(Gordale Scar)へ向けて
また歩き出しました。

We climbed, so we must go down.
I would walk on a different footpath from the steps,
and I would follow the path on a map of the leaflet,
because I wouldn't be lost in the dales and
I would return to our B&B while it was light.
So we started walking towards the next point,
Gordale Scar, even though we were quite tired at that time.

が近くにいると写真をとらずにいられない私。
とくに子羊はかわいい！
Sheep are everywhere, although I could not stop taking photographs of them, particularly when I found lambs.

羊たちと何人かの人に会いながらフットパスを歩きました。

思ったよりも近く、ほっとしたのと同時に、そこは大きなキャンプ地になっていたので、結構驚きました。

We walked for a while, we met a few people and many sheep on our footpath.
We went along a road, then we got to the entrance of Gordale Scar.
I was relieved, because it was closer than I thought, as well as I was surprised, because there was quite a big camp site.

中止していないところが英国らしいく感じます。
日本だったら登ってはいけないと書かれているでしょう……？
This is Gordale Scar! There was made by a melting glacier a long long time ago, too.
There is an attention board 'TAKE CARE. DIFFICULT CLIMB UP'.
It is quite British for me, because if it were in Japan,
it would be ' Don't Climb!'…, wouldn't it?

C: ジャネットズフォス / Janet's Foss
ゴーデールスカーの後、さすがにくたくたで、一度はコースを諦めることにしました。
が、地図上の近道はアスファルトで舗装されている一般道路で、
再び登らなくてはなりません。
つまり丘を超える登り坂なのです。
ジャネットズフォスは地図上ではすぐ近くで、私達はジェネットズフォスとはどんなものなのか知りませんでした。
登り坂に挑戦するよりも、好奇心が勝ち、とにかく私達はジェネットズフォスまでは行き、そこでまた先を決めることにしました。
そこは写真の看板から思ったよりもずっと近くで、これなら引き返せると思う距離でした。
After Gordale Scar, we got exhausted, so we would give up our walk.
If we took our shortcut, we would have to walk up a steep asphalt road.
We did not know what Janet's Foss was and it is very close to us on the map.
We wouldn't try to climb and we would like to know what Janet's Foss was.
We decided anyway to go there, then we could decide on our route.
Actually it was closer to there from the National Trust sign than we thought.
It was an easy distance to return to the road.

私達が到着するちょっと前に少年達が大きな石を滝底に投げ込んで
遊んでいて、水が濁っていました。
ですが、通常なら澄んでいると思われます。

何年も前のこと、6月下旬に羊の毛を刈る前に羊達は
ここで洗われたそうです。

was used as a sheepwash.

水が流れてゆく先を見ると魅力的な風景があり、
小川に沿って道も続いています。
この道の方がずっとアスファルトの道路よりも歩く気がします。
なので、私達はその道を歩き始めました。
その道はもともと私達が選んだコースだったのです。
I felt there was much more attractive than the asphalt road. Then we started walking along the path, actually it was the planned route. |

振り返って滝を見ると、ここからの景色の方が滝が
素敵に見えました。

美しい世界の中を歩いて、今までの疲れが癒されてゆきます。
歩き続けているのにかかわらず、歩くことのストレスから開放されてゆくのが不思議でした。

ナショナルトラストの領域が終わり、
通常のフィールドに出ました。
時計を持っていないので何時かはわかりませんが、
まだ日はあるし、平地ですし、気分が楽になっています。
