Picture Books -Ernst Kreidolf, 13th June

Kamakura Library had collected a lot of my reserved books.

If I borrowed all the books at once, they would be too heavy for me,
so I decided that I would read most of the picture books in the library.

Ernst Kreidolf's Exhibition :
: in Bunkamura Tue. 19th June ~ Sun. 29th July.
Before the exhibition, I looked at Kreidolf's books.

Ernst Kreidolf (1863~1956) was born in Switzerland. He was influenced by nature in the Alps.
Then he made picture books.

I hope I can visit the Exhibition.

"The world of small living things was as important for me as
the big real world. "

  Meadow Dwarf / Die Wiesenzwerge

Meadow Dwarf
The pictures are quite realistic and not sweet. So the publisher judged that the pictures did not suit children and declined to publish, then Kreidolf made his first picture book by his lithographs.

(At that time there were still arguments both for and against the quality of his pictures.)

Later a publisher published it, it became popular and some of his books are still sold today.

People have loved his books for a long time, partly because of his pictures.

Moreover, the pictures are high level as art and let us discover or be surprised.

Nature has fascinated people for ages, hasn't it?

It might be difficult to understand this book, if you turned the pages quickly, just to follow the story.

I feel the good points are similar to delicate seasoning in Japanese cuisine.

If people who are used to the strong taste of savoury fast food, they are unlikely to enjoy this book.

This might be another question, I think it is important when people judge or value something that they consider not only if it is 'lovely or sweet' but also consider other criteria.

In the book, a quarrel about petty neighbourhood points in the human world is represented in the dwarf's world and somehow I felt it was humourous.

Then I had a feeling of self-ridicule.

Why do I feel like this........because I am Japanese who likes
self-review? (Wry Smile)

It is interesting that this compared grasshoppers

to horses. I like this page most in the book.

Winter's Tale /
     Ein Wintermärchen

I often saw little birds like these
 in Britain.
And also I could listen to their birdsong.

Winter'sTale
I used to have this picture book, although I gave it to somebody before I went to Britain for study.

I feel now I understand more good points of the book, or I feel it is more personal to me than when I had my own copy.

Maybe, because now I have experienced views similar to those which might have influenced Kriedolf 's view of the natural world.

Perhaps there are similar views in Japan, too, however, I think
when I was in Japan before studying abroad, my eyes did not notice them.

Ice Fire

I like this knight of Swallowtail butterflies. I think Japanese sense could not make this character.

In German the name of this butterfly means a knight, so in Germany and Switzerland they are not surprised.
