Wild Strawberry

ヘビイチゴ

日本では "へびいちご" と名づけられてしまい、嫌われ気味ですが、

英国では ワイルドストロベリー / Wild Strawberry と呼ばれます。

少なくともRはこのイチゴをそう呼びます。 

Wild Strawberry はウエッジウッドの食器にも使用され、

結構な数の日本人が持っていると思います。

私は、ここに住み始めたときには、このいちごを雑草扱いして

抜いてしまていましたが、ほぼ、彼らが育つままにしています。

というか、殆どの植物を育つままにしているのですね。

だから、ジャングルの庭になってしまうのでしょう(笑)


Wild Strawberry

It is called Hebi-Ichigo / Snake Strawberry, so people dislike it, 

although British people call it Wild Strawberry or at least R does. 

Wedgewood uses a design, Wild Strawberry in tableware, and

I think a few Japanese have them. 

When I started living here, I treated them as weeds and I pulled them up, 

however, this year, I leave them as they like growing up. 

Then my garden might becaome a jungle. (Laugh)

ジャイアントホスタ / Giant Hosta

虫に食べられてしまっています。
それでも、ぐんぐん成長しています。

It is eaten by insects, although it is still growing up well.

紫欄 / シラン / Bletilla striata

漢字の紫蘭は、カタカナでは感じない美しさがあります。

日本語って、素敵!

Kanji is one of  the three styles of Japanese character. The other two are called Katakana and Hiragana.

I feel '紫蘭' (Shiran) /  Kanji's name is beautiful, although I do not feel Katakana's name:
 'シラン' (Shiran) is as  attractive as the Kanji character. 

I think Japanese is wonderful. 

I mean Japanese characters are not only meaning but are also pictures. 

Do you understand what I mean? 

チェリーミント またはチェリーセージ

Cherry Mint or Cherry Sage

私はチェリーミントと覚えていたのですけれど、

一般的にはチェリーセージと呼ばれているようです。

ミントもセージもシソ科で、ハーヴ 扱い。

好きに呼べばいいのでしょう。

I remember "Cherry Mint", although generally speaking the name is "Cherry Sage".

 Mint and Sage are Lamiaceae, and are herbs. 

I think we call this what we like, don't we?

カラー / 海芋(かいう)

Calla

カラーと覚えていましたが、海芋(かいう)という別名があるのを知りました。
カラーリリー(Calla Lily)という名前もあります。

I remember a name :Calla for this plant, although I knew another name ; Kaiu. And also it has another one, Calla Lily.

ナスターシャム / Nasturtium

ナスターシャム
日本で初めてナスターシャムを植えました。

私にとって、この花はバースの庭を思い起こさせます。
この花は食べられます。
私もちょっと食べたかもしれませんが、頻繁にではありませんでした。

バースの庭には２匹の猫がよくきてトイレ代わりに使っていたので、
なんとなく、この花にしても、ハーヴにしても、食べる気になりませんでした。

次に項、2)で2007年のバースの庭の写真をいくつかお見せします。

Nasturtium
This is the first time I planted Nasturtiums in Japan. 
The flower reminds me of Bath's Garden.
You can eat this. 
I ate a little bit, although rarely, because two cats used my garden as their toilet. 
So somehow I did not feel like eating these and other herbs. 
I shall show you some photographs of my garden in Bath in 2007.

A. 美しい景色/ Beautiful View

バースの家も、庭も、そこからの眺めもとっても素敵でした。

大家さんのトニーもとても優しく、私が辛い時は元気づけてくれました。

ありがとう！バース！

My house, garden and views were superb. 

My landlord, Tony is very kind and when I had hard times, 

he cheered me up.

B. バースの庭 / My Garden in Bath

ナスターシャムの庭 / Nasturtium Garden 

私がバース•スパ大学で陶芸を学んでいるときは、あまりに忙しくて
庭の世話をする時間が作れませんでした。

なので、その庭は鎌倉の庭よりもずっとジャングルでした。

大学を卒業した2007年の夏後に、ようやく私は庭いじりを始められたのです。


My Garden in Bath

While I was a student in Bath Spa University and I studied ceramics, 
I had been very busy, I could not make time for garden, so there was completely jungle garden more than Kamakura's garden. 

Finally I started looking after the garden after graduating from the university in summer 2007.

タイルとれんがを並べて小道を造る。

I laid bricks and tiles to make a path.

グーズベリー(西洋すぐり:写真上部)の周りに石を巡らす。

 I surrounded a Gooseberry ( top of above photograph) 

with some stones. 

ローズマリーやセージ、ミント、ヴァイオレットなどを
グーズベリーの周りに植える。

I planted Rosemary, Sage, Mint and Violets surrounding 
the gooseberry.

C. 学んだこと / Learning 

私がバースの庭から学んだ事、植物の適性は人の思惑より、少なくとも私の思惑よりも、はるかに強いことです。

私は庭づくりの経験もなく、植物の知識もありません。

こんな私は自分の思いよりも植物の適性を優先するべきで、それらに逆らってはいけないのですよね。

そのことを鎌倉の庭で実践しています。そしていつも植物の力に驚かせられています。

自然はすごい！そして素敵！

Learning 

I learned from Bath's garden that plant's characteristics are much stronger than people's views or at least mine. 

I do not have experience of gardening or knowledge of what suits each type of plant.

  

So I should prioritize plant's characteristics rather than my hope and should not go against them.

I do remember them when I plant in Kamakura garden. I am always surprised by plant's power. 

Nature is great and amazing! 

マーガレットの庭 / Margaret's Garden 

バースの家の近所に住むマーガレットは本物のグリーンフィンガーの持ち主だと思います。
この写真は２階の私の部屋(ベッドルーム)から撮影したものです。

Margaret, who was my neighbour in Bath, I think she really has green fingers. 
I took this photograph from my first floor bedroom.

2) ウツギの花 / Deutzia

この白い花は、昨年、突然、咲き始めたように思います。

近所の方々もびっくりしていました。

今年はどうかな？

と思っていましたら、このように咲いてくれました。

昨年は、なんの花かわかりませんでしたが、この時期に訪ねてくれた友人Y友が知っていたのでわかりました。

うつぎ／卯木です。

Deutzia

I think this white flower suddenly started blossoming last year. 

My neighbours  were surprised, too. 

I wondered if it would blossom again this year. 

I did not know the flower's name until my friend visited me this year. 

She knew the name, Deutzia. 

3)鎌倉図書館前 / In front of Kamakura Library 

A. ポピーを見上げて / Looking Up at Poppies

ポピー (ひなげし)と街灯 (写真右端) と御成小学校の木々のコンビネーションがおもしろいなっと図書館へ入る前に、目に留まりました。

地に咲く草花を見上げて撮るというのも、あまりないな〜とも思いました。

カメラ位置をさげたり、自分が寝そべったりした撮影できるけれど、町中ではしにくい行為ですし、そのうえ、私は足に問題があるので、難しいです。

けれども、この時は、高い位置に花壇があるので、自分が立っていても撮影可能でした。

良いチャンス！

と思って、図書館から帰るときに撮影しました。

こういう風景が目に留まるということから、我ながら、何故、自分があんな磁器作品を作るのか、わかる気がします。

Looking Up at Poppies

I caught sight of a view (above photograph) before I entered Kamakura library, because I was interested in the combination of poppies :  Papaver rhoeas, streetlight (the light end of the photograph) and trees in Onari Primary School. 

Moreover, I thought it was unusual that I could look up at flowers and take a photograph. 

Generally speaking I would have to lie down on the ground or lower the camera which is quite difficult to do in town. 

And anyway I have a problem with my leg. 

However, here, the flower bed is raised and so I could easily take a photo while standing up.

I felt this was a good opportunity!

After visiting the library, I took my chance. 

I feel somehow that I understand how I catch sight of views like this and can make my style of porcelain work.

B. ポピー / Poppy

英国では戦没者追悼記念日(11月11日)に、または前に、赤いポピー(造化)を身につけり、飾ったり、リースにしたりします。

この日はポピーデイ/ Poppy Dayとも呼ばれます。

何人かの人々は白いポピーを使用します。

赤いポピーは戦争で亡くなった兵士の象徴です。

白いポピーは平和 (すべての戦争の終わり) を象徴します。

赤いポピーが何故選ばれたかというと、第一次世界大戦のことを詩にした"In Flanders Fields (フランダースの野に)" 

から来ています。

フランダースの戦地を経験したジョン•マクレーが作りました。

彼の名前をクリックするとWikipediaの彼の項にゆき、彼の経歴とその詩を見ることができますが、英語です。

日本語版はありません。

彼はカナダ人でマルチの人、詩人であり、医者(physician)であり、

教師でもありました。

"In Flanders Fields (フランダースの野に)"は1915年に英国の雑誌 パンチ/Punchで初めて世に出て、瞬く間に多くの国々にひろまりました。

1918年、戦地のフランスで彼は肺炎で亡くなりました。

彼の経歴とその詩を日本語で紹介しているブログを見つけました。

Poppy

In Britain, before Remembrance Day (11 November) or on the day, many people wear poppies and some displays of Wreaths made of artificial red poppies. The day is also called  "Poppy Day".  

Some people use white poppies.

The red poppy is symbolic of fallen soldiers of World War Ⅰ.

The white poppy is a symbol of peace. 

The red poppy came from a poem : In Flanders Fields, by John McCrae who was Canadian and had experience in Flanders during World Wall Ⅰ. 

He joined the army as a doctor. 

You can see the poem and his antecedents in John McCrae of Wikipedia. 

C. 花の森 / Flowers of the Forest

ポピーデイのセレモニーの時に、いくつかの代表的な曲が使用されます。

その中のひとつに

"花の森/ Flowers of the Forest"

というのがあるのを見つけました。

その言葉 (タイトル) に魅かれて、リサーチをしましたら、Youtube 

(下記)でバグパイプの演奏と一緒にスコットランドの美しい景色が見られるものを見つけました。

I found "Flowers of the Forest" is one of them, 

I was interested in the word or the title so I researched it.
