I read this book twice.
Somehow I wanted to read this before
"Pistachio" (Kaho Nashiki's Book).
'Genseirin' published this wonderful book,
although it became bankrupt last year. That' too bad.

Background of Story

     Niotsuhime

Cinnaba
Cinnabar's picture come from below :

Niotsuhime /

Niotsuhime is a sister god of Amaterasuoomikami who is a great sun goddess and very popular in Japan.

They think that Niotsuhime is goddess of Cinnaber (above photograph) / Mizugane (meaning mercury / below photograph).

Cinnabar refines which becomes mercury, and cinnabar has different names, for instance, Shinsha, Philosopher's Stone and others.

Cinnabar was used as painting material of red and one of ingredients of chinese medicine.

And also it was used as poison or the elixir of life.

Ni / means cinnabar. If there is a vein of cinnabar, it could have a word 'Nio/

Mercury
Mercury's picture come from below :

Niotsuhime has been enshrined in many shrines from Kanto to the west.

They say that a family followed a vein of mercury or cinnabar and made the shrines.

Sometimes these kinds of shrines are enshrined for
Water God or
Dragon God or
Rice Filed God or
Mountain God.

Niotsuhime has been a guardian deity god of Koyasan which is a mountain and one of holy places of Buddhism in Japan and has been enshrined in above shrines.

Nevertheless, Niotsuhime is not on "Kojiki" and "Nihon Shoki" which are very popular as Japanese old history or myth or mixture.

Apparently unborn generation struck Niotsuhime off them by something's reason who knows.

Therefore if it is compared the sun god Amaterasuoomikami is in the main stream of history, Niotsuhime has been in the backgraund for a long time, and people have even forgotten that Niotsuhime is the sister god of the sun god.

There is the principal shrine of Niotsuhime, Niotsuhime in Amano, which was declared a World Heritage Site in 2004.

Finally after more than over one thousand years, its significance has been recognized.

This book was published in 1995. It ment the author picked up Niotsuhime as material for her novel, before Niotsuhime was well known.

Emperor TenJi (Prince Nakanooeno)

Time
Just Before Jinshin War, 672, Prince Ooama (later Emperor Tenmu) left a capital Oumi, he officially secluded life with his family in Yoshinomiya.

The war was between Emperor Tenji's brother : Prince Ooamano and Emperor Tenji's son : Prince Ootomo for the imperial succession, after Emperor Tenji (see above picture) died.

This book shows when Prince Ooama with his family stayed in Yoshinomiya before the war, so the story is very short.

Emperor Tenmu (Prince Oamano)

Yoshinomiya

The capital city of those days, Ounomiya is nowadays called Otsu City, in Shiga prefecture.

There was Yoshinomiya in Yoshino town in Nara prefecture, and they say it was the Miyataki Ruin.

The original idea was the Crown Prince, Prince Oamano after Emperor Tenji, however, the emperor's mind was changed which he wanted to make his son Prince Otomo for a next emperor.

Prince Oamano knew the way of the emperor which he could overthrow counterforce by force and he killed all the families,
for instance Isshi Incident (see above picture) and others.

So Prince Oamano devolved the position to Prince Otomo and then he came to Yoshino where many people supported him.

There is no historical record about the eight months the family spent in Yoshinomiya

The author's books are mainly fantasy novels
so I guess that the author let her imagination run riot.

It was unusual that Prince Ooamano as a ribal succeeded in a kind of civil war.

I guess why Prince Oamano made Jinshin War, because it was not only he desired to taken the Imperial Throne but also if he did not make it, Prince Otomo would annihilate Prince Oamano's family one day after Prince Otomo became the emperor.

After Jinshin War, Emperor Tenmu(Prince Oamano) and Emperor Jito (Unonosarara) did Imperial visit many times for Yoshinomiya,
so apparently the Emperors had their fortune or some things in Yoshinomiya.

In this story, Prince Oamano sought direction and had waited for descent of Niotsuhime which the family thought it was their guardian god.

Story and My Impression
Empress Jito (Unonosara)

Picture from :

Empress Jito (Unonosara)

Story and My Impression

Prince Kusakabe was a son of Prince Oama between Unonosara (later Empress Jito / see above pictures : ① ).

The story is told through his eyes, about the relationship between his parents, half-sibling brother : Prince Ootsu and a local girl, Saki who dose not speak.

I think Saki is an embodiment of Niotsuhime.

Prince Kusakabe is pure and delicate, so the atmosphere of whole the story is like that.

Strange to say, even though the story is from his view points, I feel he is always an on-looker rather than a participant.

I only feel he is part of the story, when he is concerned with Saki.

His father, Prince Oama officially refused the crown and said he wished to live in seclusion in Yoshinomiya.

In fact he looks at the situation and collects his power.

And also he is waiting for the descent of Niotsuhime who the family thought was their guardian god, because he wants the backing of the god before he fights.

Prince Kusekabe is not good at martial arts, whereas his younger brother, Prince Ootsu is good at them.

Prince Kusekabe knew that he could not respond as his parents hope and is weak himself, so the readers can see clearly from an episode with a swallow that he doubts the meaning of his existence.

The episode is heartrending for the readers, at least for me.

The prince feels love from his mother, Unonosara as well as he understands that she is part demon who killed her older sister.

And also he perceives that his mother was not a demon from the beginning and that some sad events have encouraged the parts in her.

In addition, he realizes that some times even her love helps the part.
(Actually her past was very sad.)

He guesses that at last she could be completely the demon.

And also he feels sorry for her.

I was impressed by his deep love for his mother.

I live as selfish and I would tell him,
"You can live as you like!"
"You can escape from your mother who becomes a demon!"

Well, I do not feel his attachment to life, so he might prefer to die rather than sacrifices somebody else or somebody feels sad for his survival???

I think that it suggestions lightly that she would kill the prince by mercury poisoning much later than this story.

I think the prince knew his mother would kill him with the poison, although he accepted the poison and he passed away.

I think the author would make the readers guess this prince would behave like that.

Others

In History, Prince Kusakabe and Niotsuhime

In History, Prince Kusakabe and Niotsuhime

After I read this book, I guessed he was killed by Unonosarara, his mother, so when
I knew that he did experience having a wife and children, I was a little bit relieved.

Although Prince Kusakabe became the Crown Prince, he passed away just before becoming Emperor and he was 27 years old. He passed away by his ill in history.

It was impossible official record that he was killed with poison by his mother who was Empress Jito.

And also normally they say Empress Jito doted on the prince. Who knows the truth.

I knew his wife and his children became Empress and Emperor, so I feel even more that he was unfortunate.

(I wonder if the person becomes Empress or Emperor is 100% happy with their position. Even allowing for my doubt, still he was unfortunate)

This story was connected with Nitstuhime who has disappeared from 'Kojiki' and 'Nihonshoki', and Prince Kusakabe who was in the background.

Somehow I feel the humanity of the author, Nashiki.

B. 草壁皇子と泰麒 / Prince Kusakabe and Taiki

The Twelve Kingdom
Unfortunately this picture does not have Taiki. Sorry!

Picture from
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Twelve_Kingdoms

Prince Kusakabe and Taiki

Prince Kusakabe reminds me of Taiki who is one of the characters in "Junikokuki / The Twelve Kingdoms" by Fuyumi Ono.

The atmosphere of "The Twelve Kingdoms" and this book are quite different so that two covers show their kingdoms of the stories.

However, I think Taiki and the prince have a similarity.

Taiki went to Kingdom of Tai which is one of 'Twelve Kingdoms', to be exact he returned to his country which is a fantasy world and the prince was taken by Niotsuhime and he goes through the spirit world or the god world.

If boys do not like wars and fights and they hate seeing blood, they could tend to merge into fantasy worlds or another worlds, couldn't they?

Pronunciation

Niotsuhime / 丹生都比売 has a few different pronunciations, below:

Nitosuhime / Nitsuhime / Nibutsuhime / Nifutsuhime / Niutsuhime and others.

And also, sometimes they say that Niotsuhime is Wakahirumenomikoto /
