A: やっと訪問 / Visiting, at last

Visiting, at last

In 2009, while I still lived in Britain, my friend: K, sent a Japanese book : "Museums and Galleries in London" (Takeshi Sakurai, Heibonsha, 2008).

Since then I had wanted to visit Kenwood House as well as Sir John Soane's Museum.

At last I have visited here, too.

Nowadays English Heritage manages the house and 45 hectares garden.

Entry is free.

According to the book,

"Hampstead Heath to the North of London is a beautiful park.

There are 320 hectares, the huge park has forest, marshy areas,
25 ponds and is a place for relaxation and refreshment.

Towards the north of the park is a dazzling villa, this is Kenwood House."

Pachelbel's Canon

In 1754, First Earl of Mansfield, a Scottish aristocrat, purchased the land including the house.

He was the Lord Chief Justice, and is best known for his judgment in Somersett's Case (1772) where he held that slavery was unlawful in England.

The Earl of Mansfield commissioned Robert Adam to extend and redesign the house interior and design the furniture.

Robert Adam was born in Scotland and he was quite popular as an architect, designer of interiors and furniture at that time.

He had worked about it for 16 years.

(Apparently his work was slowly, so sometimes the point was maligned.)

I think before Robert Adam the house was too simple for Lord Mansfield's guests who were aristocrats, judges and the Prime Minister.

In 2005, I was in the second year at Bath Spa University,
I wrote about fireplaces and I came across Robert Adam in the research.

He also designed Pulteney Bridge in Bath, now a famous tourist site.

I went to the V&A to look at his work.

I was pleased I could see his work here too.

     Guinness Saved Kenwood

Guinness Saved Kenwood

The Mansfield family had lived here until inheritance tax soared.

The sixth Earl of Mansfield sold the house, the land, and household effects including Adam's furniture which became scattered all over country in 1922.

Nowadays some of the original furniture designed by Adam for Kenwood, some of which they found in the USA, has been returned to Kenwood.

Some of the furniture was designed by Adam for other houses, and used here.

The land was sold and the area nearly became a housing estate and there were plans for a new railway and a station to be built.

However, in 1925, Lord Iveagh (Edward Cecil Guinness), chairman of Guinness, bought part of the land and the house, as well as he stopped the rest of the land being developed.

Lord Iveagh was well known as an Irish philanthropist who donated many things

And also he was a painting collector.

Then he bought the house for his paintings, although he died before hanging the collection in the house.

After he passed away, the house and the gardens were donated to the government and were opened to the public in 1928.

Today most of the pictures are from the collection of Lord Iveagh.

Dining Room

This From Guide Book

Rembrandt

The most famous picture here is "Portrait of the Artist" by Rembrandt (painted around 1665).

There is a criticism that the picture might be unfinished, however, many specialists think highly of the quality of this painting and many artists have been influenced by it.

According to the Guide Book,
"this is one of the world's greatest masterpieces."

I feel it is pure and upright art.

In the future, I guess that when the work of some contemporary artists who are popular today has been forgotten, people and Artists will still sigh at the sight of this painting.

(Although, I love contemporary art)

The painting is majestic and is above criticism by the laity.

Behind him, in the picture, are two half circles.

There are various views about the meaning, for example, they are symbolic of maps or the globe or perfection

However, we still do not know. I think probably it will never be solved, and it is one of the attractive features.

B: 婦人 / The lady

The lady

When Lord Iveagh bought "A portrait of an unknown Lady" , they thought the picture was painted by Rembrandt.

Later they found that it was painted by one of Rembrandt's Pupils, Ferdinand Bol, and a forged signature added much later.

The picture hangs symmetrically, on the wall in the dining room, with Rembrandt's self-portrait either side of the door.

(Above photograph: left of the door ; the Rembrandt , right of the door; the lady)

I felt the lady is a determined character and the picture is full of spirit. I had the impression that I could not show defiance towards the lady.

"The Guitar Player" from Guide Book

The Concert"

Saint Praxeddis"
The Geographer"
Girl with a Peal Earring"
Woman with a Lute"
The Guitar Player"

Vermeer

Vermeer (1632-1675) is now a popular painter, and did not paint many pictures. Here, one of his very few works is in the dining room.

 This is "The Guitar Player".

I like some of his works, for instance,
"The Astronomer" : picture in below,
and
"The Geographer" : picture in below,

because they include motifs which are among my favourites; maps and globes.

Both the Astronomer and the Geographer look as though they are drifting in their own worlds rather than solving a current problem.

There are 35 or 36 of his known works in the world, even though some of them have the suspicion of being counterfeit.

And also some of his works were stolen.

In the case of "The Concert", it was stolen by two pretend policemen in 1990, and it is still missing.

"The Guitar Player" was stolen in 1974, although later returned.
❋ It was lucky!

I think the real colour is different from pictures in websites, and even the Guide Book.

I thought the latest printing techniques are very good and I think the colours of the original and the print are quite close.

So I felt the original colour is changed rather than the print colour is wrong. Is the reason because it was stolen?

In 2009, I watched some TV about Vermeer, in Britain.

I had thought it was a BBC TV drama, although it was a film
"Girl with a Peal Earring"based on the book
"Girl with a Peal Earring" by Tracy Chevalier.

I think the film has very few words, a quiet atmosphere, and the tone of the colours are temperate and I thought the film was elegant.

I was surprised by the actress, Scarlett Johansson, who plays the girl.

In the film, the actress is very similar to the girl.

Nowadays, "Girl with a Peal Earring" is the most famous Vemeer,
isn't it?

like it, too.

I remember it as "Girl in A Turban".

It is sometimes referred to as "the Mona Lisa of the North", I think because of the unidentifiable smile which gives people a mysterious feeling.

Many people, including me, tend to be charmed by mysterious people or things.

Speaking of mystery around Vermeer, there was the above-mentioned theft of "The Concert" in Boston.

At that time, three pictures of Rembrandt, and a few other art works were stolen.

They haven't been found yet.

It became a film, "STOLEN"

I haven't seen it yet.

There are so few of his works that I was pleased I saw one of his works in Kenwood House.

I have looked at his works, below.

"Saint Praxeddis"
(there is some doubt about this one),
"The Geographer"
"Girl with a Peal Earring"
"Woman with a Lute"
"The Guitar Player"

After the Arbour, we can see a tree-lined road.
The view is tasteful and it looks as though it might be used as a filming location, perhaps for a Jane Austen drama or film.

Landscape Garden

The second Earl of Mansfield commissioned Humphry Repton and he changed from old-fashioned gardens to landscaped gardens.

Repton was one of next generation after Capability Brown.

'Capability Brown is remembered as the last of the great English eighteenth-century artists to be accorded his due and, England's greatest gardener' (Wikipedia).''

Repton's ideas followed Capability Brown, although Repton created the phrase, 'landscape gardener'.

Part of his new approach was to paint water colours of before and after possible views.

Today, we can see this garden which Repton designed.
